What is PrEP?
PrEP stands for Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis. PrEP is a course of HIV drugs taken by HIV-negative people to
protect them against HIV-1 infection.
Truvada is currently the only drug approved for use as PrEP. Truvada is a pill that is a combination of two
active anti-HIV medicines-Tenofovir and Emtricitabine. It is a daily prescription medication that can help you
to protect from HIV-1 infection. If you don’t have HIV-1, taking PrEP every day, it will reduce the 90%
chance of getting HIV-1 infected from sex with your already infected partner.
Truvada is the brand name for PrEP, but generic forms of PrEP are also available which contain the same
active medicines-Tenofovir and Emtricitabine. Generics Truvada contains the same active ingredients as
Brand Truvada and work in the same way and with same effect.
How does PrEP prevent HIV?
PrEP (Truvada) is an anti-HIV-1 medicine. It’s both active ingredients stops the replicating and growth of
virus in our blood cells. If you are not infected with HIV-1 and have been taking PrEP daily, the chances is
less to be affected because daily dose of PrEP makes good enough level of the anti-HIV medicine in your
blood cells to prevent you from getting infected with HIV-1.
Who can take PrEP?
PrEP is not for anyone this is especially for those people who don’t have HIV but they are at higher risk of
getting HIV-1. These people can take PrEP daily consistently to prevent HIV-1 infection. PrEP can stop
infection and prevent to spread throughout the body. Daily dose of PrEP is highly effective for preventing
HIV-1 from sex or injection drug use.
PrEP is recommended for those people who are:
- HIV-negative and in an ongoing sexual relationship with an HIV-positive partner.
- gay or bisexual man who had anal sex without using condom or been diagnosed with an STDs in the
past 6 months. - man or woman who don’t use condoms during regular sex with partners of unknown HIV status and
at substantial risk of HIV infection (for example, they inject drugs, have multiple partners at the same
time, or have bisexual male partners). - gay or bisexual man in a new sexual relationship but not yet aware of your sexual partners HIV status
and not using condoms. - in relationship with your partner with HIV-positive and willing to get pregnant, you should consult
your doctor immediately about PrEP if you are not already taking it. PrEP may be an option to protect
you and your baby from getting HIV infection while to get pregnant, during pregnancy, or
breastfeeding to baby. - having anal or vaginal sex regularly without using condoms with multiple partners.
How effective is PrEP?
Consistently daily use of PrEP is the more effective way to reduce infection chances. If you use it properly in
correct manner it can reduce more than 90% chances of getting HIV infected.
It is very and absolutely important to take PrEP every day without any failure. If you don’t take it every day,
might your body will not get enough level of medicine in your blood cells to keep you protected from HIV.
It should be noted that PrEP do not prevent other sexual transmitted infections like gonorrhea and chlamydia.
So you should must use condoms along with PrEP to avoid other STDs and give yourself extra protection
against HIV.
Studies have shown that PrEP reduces the risk of getting HIV from sex by about 90% when taken daily.
Among people who inject drugs, PrEP reduces the risk of getting HIV by at least 75% when taken daily.
What are the side effects of PrEP?
PrEP is very safe. So far there is no any serious problems have been reported by people who are taking this.
PrEP may cause minor side effects like nausea, vomiting, dizziness, loss of appetite or headaches but these
usually disappear with time. Most people on PrEP have no side effects at all.
If you still experiencing any side effects that creates any problem you can consult your doctor to figure out the
ways to deal with it.
How can I start PrEP and how long do I take it for?
PrEP is a prescription medicine prescribed by a doctor. To start PrEP course you must consult your doctor to
take an HIV test to ensure that you don’t already have HIV. They will do your blood tests for HIV, Hepatitis
B and C, and other STDs and working condition of your kidney. You should tell your doctor all your medical
history including current ongoing medications and other health issues.
If you have HIV already then taking PrEP may decrease the HIV treatment less effective. While you’re taking
PrEP, you should visit your doctor for regular check-ups and tests at least every three months.
Unlike HIV treatment, people do not stay on PrEP for life. PrEP is normally taken for small duration like for
some weeks, months or a few years actually when a person feels high risk of HIV. Do not stop taking PrEP
without consulting your doctor as they will need to test and monitor your health conditions.
Is PrEP effective for vaginal and anal sex?
Yes. PrEP can prevent HIV infection during both vaginal and anal sex, but the drugs in PrEP are absorbed
much more effectively by rectal tissue than vaginal tissue.
If I take PrEP, can I stop using condoms?
NO, PrEP will protect you from HIV infection only, but it doesn’t give you any protection from other
sexually transmitted infections (STIs) like gonorrhea, chlamydia and hepatitis C. So you should use condoms
for your allover safety.
What else do I need to know about being on PrEP?
- You must follow safer sex practices with use of latex condom. Taking TRUVADA for PrEP may not
keep you protected from getting HIV-1 infection. - Do not miss any doses of TRUVADA. Missing doses may increase your risk of getting HIV-
1 infection. You should take your daily dose without any failure. - You should aware of your and your partner HIV status.
- If your partner with HIV positive and consistently taking treatment, your risk of getting HIV is lower.
- Get tested for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections regularly specially in every three months
while on Truvada course. - Anyhow if you get infected and become HIV-1 positive, you have to consult your doctor immediately
to start some other medicines because PrEP or Truvada do not treat HIV-1 positive alone. - PrEP or Truvada is only for HIV-negative people to reduce the risk of infection so do not take before
having tested your HIV Status which should be negative. If it is positive consult your doctor
immediately.
